While driving in the car with Theo (age 6) today, this conversation took place:
Theo (just after we crossed some railroad tracks): Mom, when I grow up I'm going to be a train driver.
Me: That sounds cool. What else might you like to be?
Theo: You mean I can be more than one thing?
Me: Well, I meant in case you change your mind at some point. Are there other things you'd like to be?
Theo: A monster truck driver. I've wanted to be that for about four years now. (it's true)
Me: Okay...anything else?
Theo: A tank driver?
Me (getting a bit worn by the vehicle theme): Is there anything you'd like to be that doesn't involve vehicles?
Theo: A farmer. I'd like to have a horse farm. Because I don't want to work too hard and it's a lot of work to clean up after cows or goats.
Me (so proud that my son apparently wants to either drive very large vehicles or be a lazy farmer that doesn't want to work very hard and I don't believe there is such a thing): Well, horses need cleaning and attention, too.
Theo: I know, but I'll only have one horse. Well, maybe two. Actually, it depends on how many kids I have. If I have three kids, I'll have to have (thinking for a second)...five horses.
Me: Why five?
Theo: One for me, one for each of my children and one for my wife! And I think the horses for my kids should be smaller because it's hard for kids to learn to ride a big horse right away!
Me: (a little reassured that at least I might have a few grandchildren some day) That sounds very thoughtful, sweetie.
